Radient Power Battery Pvt. Ltd. has developed an innovative biochar-based phase change material (PCM) composite for thermal management of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) used in electric vehicles (EVs). This novel material is created by embedding organic PCMs (such as stearic acid or paraffin) into biochar, which is derived from agricultural waste (e.g., sugarcane bagasse, rice husk) through pyrolysis. The biochar’s porous structure enhances thermal conductivity, prevents PCM leakage, and improves flame retardancy—addressing the major limitations of conventional PCMs. The process involves: Biochar production at 500–700°C under inert conditions. Vacuum impregnation and melt blending of PCMs into the biochar matrix.
